Intent

At Whittingham Church of England Primary School, our vision is that hand in hand, we will become kind, collaborative and courageous citizens of our community and the wider world. Inspired by the story of The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37), we recognise that technology is an integral part of modern life and that computing equips children with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to flourish in an increasingly digital world.
Our Computing curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and innovation whilst enabling children to become confident, responsible and discerning users of technology. We aim to develop computational thinking, digital literacy and programming skills through a carefully sequenced curriculum that prepares children for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.
We place a strong emphasis on online safety, ensuring that children understand how to use technology responsibly, respectfully and safely. Our curriculum empowers children to make informed choices, protect themselves and others online, and recognise both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with living in a connected world.

Implementation

Computing is taught through a carefully planned and progressive curriculum that develops children's knowledge, skills and understanding from the Early Years through to Year 6.
Across our Computing curriculum we will:

• deliver well-sequenced lessons that build progressively upon prior learning and develop long-term understanding;
• revisit and strengthen key concepts, knowledge and computational thinking through regular retrieval and application;
• explicitly teach ambitious computing vocabulary and ensure children confidently use subject-specific language;
• provide opportunities for children to apply their knowledge through programming, digital media, data handling and computer systems;
• teach online safety as an integral part of every unit, enabling children to develop safe, respectful and responsible digital behaviours;
• encourage creativity, problem solving, collaboration and logical thinking through practical and engaging learning experiences;
• ensure learning is inclusive and appropriately adapted so that every child, including those with SEND, can participate, succeed and flourish;
• provide opportunities for children to use technology purposefully across the wider curriculum, enhancing learning in a range of subjects;
• regularly revisit key online safety messages in response to the changing digital world and the needs of our pupils
