Music

Intent:

The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all children: perform, listen to, review and evaluate music, are taught to sing, create and compose music and to understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated.

At Whittingham C of E Primary School, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a variety of styles, traditions, and musical genres. We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts. We aim to:

  • Ensure we are covering skills and concepts from the National Curriculum

  • We aim to develop their musical skills through using a variety of songs and instruments.

  • We have chosen these musicians due to their local and global importance.

  • We will ensure children have the opportunity to use and develop these skills throughout the lessons.

Implementation:

  • We will structure lessons so that prior learning and revision of key skills are continuously built upon.

  • We will ensure key skills and techniques are introduced and used with lessons.

Impact:

  • We want children to develop a love of music and learn about a variety of styles, genres and origin of music.

  • We will measure the impact of learning through assessing their development of key skills.

We truly believe in the power of music and plan a wide range of opportunities both in and out of school for our pupils to gain a breadth of experience and to be inspired.
During the least school year ( 2021-22)  KS 1 attended Big Sing for Mini Singers and KS2 attended The Big Sing at The Sage Gateshead.
As part of CPD last year, we h had sessions planned and taught by Annelise, a music specialist from music partnership north. The sessions are called 'building blocks' and are taught to EYFS and KS1. In the document below you will see some familiar faces enjoying their session with Annelise!
